Artist Statement
It feels magical, the moment a drawing speaks to me. I know in that instant that I have captured the essence of my subject. I experience an emotional connection with my work that seems to transcend time and space, transforming a mere drawing into a true portrait.
The extraordinary conversation I have with my subjects is captivating and mystifying, and it is this quality that I try to convey to my viewers. I want my audience to actually feel that the person in the portrait is in the room with them, that there is recognition, and a sense of motion. I tend to fall into a kind of love with my subjects, and ultimately that is what I hope happens with my viewers as well.
I work primarily with graphite, largely due to the charm and simplicity of black and white. I find that graphite is an extremely versatile medium that I have yet to exhaust. It has become the cornerstone to my artistic expression.
